Why Private Security?

"Security Guard". That title evokes images of a poorly trained, ill equiped guard who wears the remnants of yesterday's chili dog on his uniform shirt.

The private security industry has a serious image problem which is richly deserved. Private security companies, large and small, sell the illusion of security, knowing full well that what they are selling is largely a paper tiger bluff. They are generally incapable of providing effective protection to companies or individuals.

In an era when terrorism, workplace violence, home invasions and other violent crimes dominate news media headlines there is a tremendous need for professional protectors.

There are entrepreneurs in the contract and proprietary security fields who are the leaders in the development and delivery of professional protective services to their clients or employers. These individuals are pioneering a movement within the private security industry indentified as Private Securiting.

Private security officers differ from security guards significantly. Security guards usually receive little more than a few hours of pre-assignment training and some on-the-job training. Leaders of the private security movement generally screen and hire persons with previous training certifications from private and public security academies. Because of the prerequisites of those attending public and private security academies they are able to utilize the knowledge and skills of academy trained officers to deal more effectively with security incidents.

Armed private security are typically required to obtain firearms training certifications and to requalify with their firearms at least annually. These officers are also expected to develope equipment which include pepper gas devices, stun guns, security batons and tasers.

The leaders in the private security movement are maximizing the performance of private security officers by training these officers in computer operations, electronic access control, c.c.t.v. surveillance camera operations and other areas of technical expertise that will increase the officer's effectiveness.

A number of firms are capitalizing on this trend in some very innovative ways. The PRO Private security Agency of Columbus, Ohio has helped rid urban housing communities of illicit drug criminals. In Lakewood, Colorado FirstWatch Security's trained officers are being utilized by the Lakewook security Department to provide security at crime scenes, transporting and guarding prisoners during hospital stays and other assignments that allow the department's regular officers to engage in more productive security duties. In North Carolina Metro Special security provide full on site law enforcement services to private business firms, communities and local governments on a contract basis. These are just a few examples of private security operations that provide effective protection beyound the capabilities of most security guard firms.

Intelligent, well informed employers and contract clientele are examining the quality services available utilizing private security as opposed to security guards. Employers and clients who are serious about the security of their assets and employees will opt to utilize the services of trained private security officers. These firms will reap the benefits of lowered liability exposures, security matters handled more effectively and companies being represented with a highly positive and professional image.

In the 21st century private security offer effective security to employers and clients who recognize the critical differences between private security and run-of-the-mill security guards.
